Subject: Mac OS 8.5.x Memory Bug Patch
macos85xpatch
Abstract:
This patch corrects a problem with Mac OS 8.5 and 8.5.1 first reported by
Steve Jasik. Steve writes: "The manifestation of the bug is random
tromping of memory and sometimes it corrupts the heap (this happens when
an Application is launched). The problem is that some programmer did a
Load Contents when he meant to do a Load Address."
Steve recommends hacking your System file with ResEdit, but I have made a
patch that should help people get rid of this bug much easier.
What it does:
The patch replaces value $83 at offset $1968 of the System's nlib
resource ID=11 with the value $3B. This is what Steve recommends.
Use at your own risk, and never patch an original or active file! I have
tested this with the US and the German versions of Mac OS 8.5 and 8.5.1.
I have attached a copy of the patcher, which can also be downloaded from

-Horst
